Empowering Diverse Lives Financially: Unveiling Khatapana's Vision to Revolutionize Financial Management Locally & Globally

In today's fast-paced world, where innovation is the norm, traditional barriers in managing finances still persist, leaving individuals and small businesses grappling with the complexities of accounting and financial management. My journey as a legal practitioner, coupled with my ground-level interactions with women entrepreneurs, exposed a glaring gap in financial literacy and effective record-keeping, two foundational pillars that often held back promising ventures. The spark for Khatapana was ignited by these and some other experiences, leading to a vision that aims to revolutionize financial management both in Nepal and across the globe.

Record keeping is boring, accounting is boring, financial management is complex and cumbersome. These all in some cases take years of training and education. But everyone needs them, right? How can we make these aspects easy to use and easily accessible for all? We started off with these questions.

The Birth of Khatapana: Addressing Real-World Struggles

Ernesto Sirolli's trinity of management—product, marketing, and financial management—forms the backbone of any successful venture. However, my encounters with entrepreneurs unveiled a challenge: while many were adept at product development and marketing, financial management was often shrouded in confusion. The struggles were real, particularly for women entrepreneurs who faced the daunting task of juggling multiple responsibilities, more so in case of smallholder farmers. While they would break their back to run their small enterprise, they had to rely on men when it came to managing their money.

But the challenges extended beyond entrepreneurs and business. While each of us are taught various technical subjects and skills to have a vocation to earn money but almost never to manage our money. Salaried professionals, students, housewives—you name it, all segments of society encountered difficulties in managing their money. Entrepreneurs esp. Running their own sole proprietor businesses often struggle at demarcating personal and business finances. Record-keeping remains a puzzle, leading to muddled financial goals and missed opportunities.

We are expected to be good money managers when it comes to running a business but aren’t we required to be equally good in managing our personal money? Or as they say charity begins at home, shouldn’t we be good at managing our own personal finances before we can take care of our business finances?

More than 95% of people in Nepal do not track our finances or even consider doing it because a myth that financial management is only for business is deep rooted. Money is a taboo and necessary evil and while we need it at all aspects of our lives and transact using it multiple times a day, we think we will

These observations triggered a resolve to bridge the gap and simplify financial management for everyone, irrespective of their role or background.

Empowering Diverse Lives: The Khatapana Way

Khatapana's core philosophy revolves around empowerment through simplicity. By transforming the complexities of financial management into an intuitive, user-friendly app, we aim to empower diverse lives with the tools needed to excel financially. From entrepreneurs striving to nurture their ventures to students learning to manage their stipends wisely, Khatapana caters to a spectrum of individuals.

Consider the case of a budding entrepreneur. Khatapana provides a platform to seamlessly track business expenses, sales, and profits, enabling informed decisions that propel growth. No more lost receipts or confusion over where the money went—Khatapana simplifies it all. And no more reliance on an accountant or a financial consultant as everything is just in your fingertips. By no means do we undermine the importance of accounting services or professional services provided by experts though, but only a few may actually afford and have excess to such expertise. We are also not replacing them in any way!

For a salaried professional, the app becomes a personal financial coach. It helps set budgeting goals, tracks expenses, and even forecasts savings potential. Khatapana empowers individuals to understand and manage their finances better, enabling them to fulfill aspirations while staying financially prudent.

Housewives, often the unsung financial managers of households, find Khatapana a valuable ally. It offers a comprehensive solution to manage household expenses, savings, and future financial goals. With Khatapana, every rupee spent is accounted for, ensuring transparent financial management within the family.

Identifying and Fixing the Pain Points

Our focus has always been an individual and never a business and hence we do not call ourselves an accounting, invoicing or record keeping application but a comprehensive financial management solution for individuals from all walks of life and diverse backgrounds.

Cash is still the king and credit is what we all love. And no matter how much penetration digital payments solutions have made, helping us have a transaction trail somewhere, that only solves a part of the problem. It clearly fails to provide all in one place record keeping and personalized finance management solutions. When it comes to small businesses, managing credit transactions and timely collection thereof, doing it manually is certainly a tedious and cumbersome process. A small business owner is already overworked! Spending hours on follow ups for recovering their credit is certainly not a task that adds value to their business.

Selling on credit is inevitable and timely follow up and collection is almost impossible. And then there is a lack of transparency where the parties question the authenticity of transactions after a certain period.

Take this simple example: I usually buy groceries from my local grocery store who delivers groceries on credit. I simply order over the period and at the end of the month, the store sends me an invoice (not a tax invoice) of all the items that I have ordered along with the details of any previous purchases. I do not settle it at one go as I pay whatever is comfortable for me. Over time, the credit goes on accumulating as I pay less than I owe and after a certain period, it sounds like huge. So, let’s say my monthly grocery bill is Rs. 10,000 and I just settle half of it. In three months, I owe Rs. 15,000 to the grocery store that’s 1.5 times my monthly bill. And then I feel suspicious and doubt if I still owe that much. Because I may have lost earlier invoices and settlement receipts and have no clue how that much amount has accumulated.

Now think from the grocery store’s perspective. Their investment of Rs. 15,000 is locked up with me and there would be many customers like me. If that number is 100, then that’s Rs. 1.5 million of their costly capital locked up. And this is a pain point we would like to work on and streamline as we go forward.

In addition, having complete financial data to substantiate your business expansion plan certainly helps small businesses have better access to finance. We do not have a credit score mechanism and we all know how business plans are prepared to look investment worthy. And the ground realities are completely opposite. This may be one of the reasons why so many businesses fail and are forced to shut down even after being well financed. Effective financial management can make or break your business. At the same time, our goal is also to build an ecosystem of trust and transparency where banks, financial institutions and lenders have reliable data and realistic business plans to assess the creditworthiness of businesses they lend to.
