What is LLB?

LLB stands for Legum Baccalaureus, Latin for Bachelor of Laws. In Nepal, TU's LLB is a three-year professional degree for students who already hold a bachelor's degree in any subject. It runs under the annual exam system at TU constituent campuses and affiliated colleges.

An LLB lets you:

  • Study Nepali law and core legal principles in depth
  • Sit the Nepal Bar Council licensing exam and practise law
  • Go on to an LLM or other postgraduate law study

If you have just finished +2 and want to study law, the five-year BALLB is the other route. See our guide on how to become a lawyer in Nepal.

LLB seats in Nepal: 3,800 across 12 campuses

The 2082/83 notice raised total seats from 2,300 to 3,800. Five TU constituent campuses joined the programme this year after a TU Academic Council decision: Padma Kanya (Kathmandu), Bhaktapur, RR Campus (Janakpur), Degree Campus (Biratnagar) and Surkhet.

LLB entrance exam syllabus (TU)

The exam has 100 objective questions, each worth one mark. The question paper is in both English and Nepali.

AreaMarks
Jurisprudence (विधिशास्त्र)50
Constitutional Law (संवैधानिक कानून)30
Muluki Civil Code, Civil Procedure Code, Criminal Code, Criminal Procedure Code (2074)20
Total100 objective questions, full marks 100, pass marks 40, 1 hr 40 min

Jurisprudence (50 marks)

Jurisprudence is the theory and philosophy of law. It is the largest section. Expect questions on:

  • What law is and why we have it
  • Schools of thought: natural law, legal positivism, sociological jurisprudence
  • Legal rights and duties
  • The role of law in society
  • Legal reasoning and interpretation

Constitutional Law (30 marks)

This section covers the Constitution of Nepal and how the state works:

  • Fundamental rights and duties
  • Separation of powers between the legislature, executive and judiciary
  • Nepal's federal structure
  • Constitutional bodies such as the Election Commission, CIAA and NHRC
  • Judicial review and the rule of law

The 2074 Muluki codes (20 marks)

  • Muluki Civil Code, 2074: personal and property rights, contracts, family law (marriage, divorce, adoption), inheritance and obligations.
  • Muluki Civil Procedure Code, 2074: how civil cases move through court, from filing and evidence to judgment, appeal and enforcement.
  • Muluki Criminal Code, 2074: criminal offences and their punishments.
  • Muluki Criminal Procedure Code, 2074: investigation and trial, including arrest, rights of the accused, bail and sentencing.

Exam rules

  • Mark answers with a tick (✓) in black ink only. Any other colour, pencil, extra marks or symbols cancel your whole answer sheet.
  • Write your question set and symbol number correctly. A wrong or blank set or symbol number means your sheet is not checked.
  • Keep your admit card with you for the whole exam.
  • You can't enter the hall more than 15 minutes after the start, or leave in the first hour.
  • Books, mobile phones, calculators, Bluetooth devices, tablets, earphones, smartwatches and other electronic devices are not allowed.
  • Sit in your assigned seat and don't move without the invigilator's permission.

How the merit list is prepared

Admission is by merit. You need at least 40 marks to qualify. Each campus publishes its own merit list from the applicants who chose it.

If two candidates have the same score, TU ranks them by:

  1. Bachelor's percentage or CGPA
  2. +2 or PCL percentage or CGPA
  3. SEE/SLC percentage or CGPA
  4. Whether the bachelor's was from a public or community campus

Reservation (quota) seats

TU reserves 20% of seats at each campus for disadvantaged groups. The 2082/83 notice sets these numbers:

Group600-seat campus300-seat campus200-seat campus
Women1896
Dalit women421
Muslim women211
Adivasi/Janajati20107
Madhesi1365

Persons with disabilities1053
Backward remote areas953
Muslim842
Tharu1264
Others (gender and sexual minorities, economically disadvantaged Khas Arya)943
Total1206040

Children of permanent TU teachers and staff get 2 extra seats in each programme.

Things to know before you claim a quota:

  • You still need 40 marks. If no one in a group reaches 40, the seat goes back to open merit.
  • Unfilled Dalit women and Muslim women seats go to other women. Unfilled Madhesi Dalit seats go to other Madhesi candidates.
  • "Backward remote areas" means permanent residents of Mugu, Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Dolpa, Achham, Bajhang, Bajura and Jajarkot.
  • Select the quota in the online form and upload the recommendation letters it needs, such as from the District Administration Office, your local government or the relevant national body. Missing documents mean you are left out of the quota list.
  • You can't use a quota if you have already used one for another programme. A false claim cancels your admission.

Admission after the result

  1. Check your name on the merit list of the campus you chose.
  2. Apply for admission at that campus within the deadline it sets. If you miss it, you lose your place.
  3. If a campus still has empty seats, it can publish a notice, with Faculty of Law approval, inviting qualified candidates from other campuses' merit lists to apply.

What you study in the LLB

The LLB runs for three years under TU's annual exam system. Core areas include criminal law, civil law, constitutional and administrative law, and civil and criminal procedure. The course also builds practical skills through legal research and drafting, moot courts and internships. For the official subject list by year, check the course of study on fol.edu.np.

After the LLB you can sit the Bar Council licensing exam, apply for legal and government jobs, or continue to an LLM. For pay at different career stages, see lawyer salary in Nepal.

How to prepare for the LLB entrance

  • Start with jurisprudence. It carries half the marks.
  • Read the Constitution itself, especially fundamental rights, the federal structure and the constitutional bodies.
  • Don't skip the codes. They are only 20 marks, but questions often test specific provisions.
  • Learn legal terms in both English and Nepali, since the paper uses both.
  • Practise MCQs and past questions to learn the question style and pace yourself for 100 questions in 100 minutes.
  • Check fol.edu.np regularly for notices, the admit card and results.

For flashcards and practice MCQs built around the TU syllabus, you can try Entrance Guru, available on Google Play and the App Store.
